The foundations laid in school affect children for the rest of their lives. But with so many challenges facing Jersey City’s children, many are not making it through school at all.
We know you want your children to have brighter prospects, so we’re committed to developing the kind of values, skills, knowledge, confidence and character in our students that will propel them to success in school, college, and career, and lead to a happy, contributory life.
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision of the “Beloved Community” inspires us – and we know that when children develop positive values, high-level skills, inner-strength and confidence, it advances Dr. King’s vision, producing a more caring, prosperous, and happy world for everyone. (Click here for more on King’s vision and ours.)
Nationally normed Terra Nova assessments in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies evidence that Beloved’s scholars have been progressing by one-and-a-half grade levels worth of learning a year.
Scholars who came to BelovED behind grade level are now above grade level. Scholars who came to us above grade level are now further above grade level.
Look at our results on state assessments:
The percentage of Third Graders at BelovED scoring “Proficient” on PARCC Math assessments last year was almost 45% higher than the national average and almost TWICE the percentage at Jersey City’s traditional public schools.
On State Science assessments, 97% of BelovED scholars scored Proficient or better, with the majority of those scholars (57%) scoring Advanced Proficient.
In the 2015-2016 school-year, we will offer grades K-5. We will add one grade level per year and we plan to grow into a K-12 school with our elementary, middle, and high schools located on near-by Jersey City campuses. Our goal is to have students who begin with us be able to continue with us, so they can matriculate straight from BelovED to the college of their choice.
With New York City right next door, and with our top-flight restaurants, thriving arts scene, and wonderful diversity, Jersey City is already known for its cultural vitality. We also want Jersey City to enjoy the best charter and district public schools in America – so we’ll do whatever it takes to give our students the very best education to be found anywhere.
FACILITIES & BUS TRANSPORTATION
In September 2012, BelovED Community Charter School opened in the Downtown section of Jersey City at 508 Grand Street in a beautiful facility that is less than 15 years old. An addition was added for SY2014-15 that includes classrooms, a gym, music and art specialty rooms, and a huge technology room . We offer Grades K-5 at this site (below, left) and will soon be opening a middle school (below, right) across the street. In the future, we will also open a high school near-by and a second K-12 campus in Greenville.
To reach our campus, BelovED offers bus transportation from throughout Jersey City. (Click here for bus transportation information.) (Click here for PM bus schedules effective 9/18/17.)
A SCHOOL YOU CAN LOVE
Extraordinarily high satisfaction levels were expressed by BelovED’s students, by their parents/guardians, and by the school’s teachers in year-end, online surveys that granted respondents complete anonymity. High satisfaction is further reflected in BelovED’s exceedingly high student and faculty retention rate.
What is our secret?
At BelovED Community Charter School, we are committed to your child, and we accept responsibility – “no excuses” – for helping your child develop the kind of values, skills, knowledge, confidence and character that will propel him or her to success in school, college, and career, and produce a happy, contributory life.
A key feature of the school is its caring school climate – a climate that makes students feel cared about and results in their caring about others, also. Children learn more when they love school – and children most often love school when they feel welcomed and cared for at school.
We combine our commitment to your child and our caring school climate with an education program that features a proven curriculum and instructional methodology (See Proven Success).
And we infuse our curriculum with values and character education that encourages children to value themselves, their family, community and world, and to find happiness in working hard to develop their capacities so they can advance their own and others’ well-being.
Students become partners in our educational mission, not merely its target. We engage students in peer tutoring and service, and in improving student life through Student Life Organizations where they learn to be leaders and to take initiative, and where they gain confidence in, and enjoy, their ability to make life better for others.
Ours is an ambitious mission. To facilitate success, we pay close attention to each child’s progress using sophisticated measurement tools that enable us to customize responses to each child’s needs.
Moreover, each child receives schoolwide support. You won’t have just a single teacher working with your child. You’ll have a team of professionals supporting your child’s teachers and directly providing your child with customized assistance.
To provide extra time for vital learning and fun activities, BelovED features a longer-than-average school day. Following breakfast at 7:45 am, our school day runs until 3:45 pm.
In addition, BelovED provides an optional aftercare program for its students until 5:30 pm. This provides parents who work until 5:00 pm a safe and supportive place for their children, even as their children get tutoring assistance and/or have fun.
To help our students retain and advance their skills over the summer months, BelovED also offers free optional summer sessions, combining work and play.
At BelovED, intentionality and structure increase each child’s sense that the way one approaches life is important, and helps students develop habits that are key to successful living.
We’ll be working hard to give your children the best possible start in life – and we think that you will find BelovED to be a school you can love.
